Frederick Campbell Crews was born on February 20, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Yale University, A.B., in 1955; and from Princeton University, Ph.D., in 1958. He married Elizabeth Peterson on September 9, 1959. They have two daughters. Crews has been teaching English at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1958.
